Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO)
In April 2017, Amfora announced that it had entered a worldwide, exclusive license agreement with Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) for its proprietary technology to increase energy density in specified forage crops. In the next 20 years, we will need 50 percent more plant-based oils to meet the nutritional needs of the global population. CSIRO’s transformational technology provides a way to address the growing demand for plant oils within the limitations of the current agricultural footprint. The technology allows plants to use solar energy they capture to convert the leaf’s starch reserves into more energy-dense oil molecules, significantly increasing energy value of the vegetative tissue where the oil accumulates. Researchers at CSIRO have been able to achieve around 35 percent oil content into vegetative tissue of plants, about the same amount as in many oil seed crops. CSIRO also participated in Amfora’s Series A funding round.
